Prior to Application
I'm interested in Missouri State University for graduate school, but I am unsure which program is the most suitable for me. Can I schedule an appointment with an advisor?
Graduate Admissions at Missouri State University is a decentralized process. Admission decisions are made by each graduate program. Therefore, specific questions regarding your application/admission should be directed to your program of interest. The Graduate College can answer general questions, but does not provide academic advising. For academic advising, contact the Graduate Program Director who oversees the program you are interested in pursuing.

Can I meet with someone in the department to which I would like to apply?

Is it necessary to contact a faculty member before I apply?
This varies from program to program. Before starting your application, it is very important to check on your academic program's page and contact the Graduate Program Director. Some programs do require you to have a faculty advisor.
Can I apply to your graduate programs before receiving my bachelor's degree?
If you are in the process of completing your bachelor's degree, you can submit an application now. You will need to provide an official transcript showing conferral of your bachelor's degree prior to registering for your second semester of classes.
May I take graduate classes at Missouri State without being admitted into a program?
Yes. You can take classes as a Postbaccalaureate student classification (Completion of a bachelor's degree required.). Permission to register from the professor may be required. Postbaccalaureate students are classified as nondegree-seeking and as such have limited access to financial aid.
Am I eligible to apply for graduate studies at Missouri State University?

Do online graduate students pay more if they are Non-Missouri Residents?
No. Per credit hour costs are the same for Missouri Residents and Non-Missouri Residents. You can find detailed tuition and fees online. Check under the section Tuition for Internet based instruction (per credit hour).
Are there Other Enrollment Fees (per credit hour) of which I should be aware?
Yes. Some colleges have Other Enrollment Fees added on top of the per credit hour for graduate courses. You can find detailed tuition and fees online. Check under the section Other Enrollment Fees (per credit hour).
How can I estimate my tuition costs by using the per credit hour costs outlined on the Detailed Tuition and Fees page?
The first step would be to determine the total number of graduate credit hours required to graduate with your graduate program. You can find this in the Graduate Catalog. Programs require anywhere between 30-60+ graduate hours to earn the degree. As an example, if one's program requires 36 graduate credit hours to graduate then one would multiple 36 by the per credit hour cost. This would give you a general idea of the basic cost; not including books or additional fees.
Are there Student Service Fees?

International Graduate Applicants
Is there a different application for international graduate applicants?
No. International students will need to complete a GradCAS application when appying.
My bachelor's degree was completed in 3 years, is that acceptable?
Graduate Admissions will evaluate the foreign credentials to determine whether it is equivalent to a 4-year degree in the United States. Work with Graduate Admissions (IntGradAdmissions@missouristate.edu).
Can Graduate Admissions or International Services tell me I am eligible before I submit an application?
No. Determining whether an applicant is eligible, especially international applicants, is done through the processing of an application. Graduate Admissions must conduct a credential evaluation for applicants who completed their degrees abroad in order to know the applicant's GPA equivalency on the 4.0-Grade Point Average used in the United States.
Can I send you an email detailing my GPA, academic background and other information to find out whether I will be admitted?
No. Admission decisions are made at the program level. Neither Graduate Admissions nor International Services can tell you whether you will be admitted.
I meet the minimum admission requirements. Does that mean I am guaranteed admission?
No, meeting the minimum admission requirements only means you are eligible to be considered for the graduate program.
Can I apply to a graduate program without proof of English Proficiency?
English proficiency is required for all international applicants and your application cannot be considered without a score. Please visit our English Proficiency Requirements page to see our requirements and possible exceptions.
Are there any programs that require a higher TOEFL or IELTS score than the minimum Missouri State University requirements?
Yes, the Master of Accountancy and Master of Science in Cybersecurity require a TOEFL score of 90. Please review each programs specific admissions page for a breakdown of the component parts.
What are the international graduate application deadlines?

Do you offer conditional admission? Can I get conditional admission?
Missouri State Graduate College does not offer conditional admission. If you require conditional admission in order to improve your English proficiency then conditional admission is offered, on a case-by-case basis and with the approval of the Graduate Program Director, through the English Language Institute.
I have completed an English language program at another College or University. Do I still need to take the IELTS/TOEFL?
Yes. The program you completed with that school can only be used by that institution.
My WES evaluation gave me a higher GPA than that given by Missouri State's evaluation. Why?
International Services evaluates international transcripts based on its own experience and training. Missouri State University evaluations are final and will always take precedence over third-party evaluations.
Nondegree Applicants and Students
May I take graduate classes at Missouri State without being admitted into a program?
Yes. You can take classes as a Postbaccalaureate student classification (Completion of a bachelor's degree required). Permission to register from the professor may be required. Postbaccalaureate students are classified as nondegree-seeking and as such have limited access to financial aid. See more information at Nondegree-Seeking Services.
Can I get financial aid as a nondegree student?
In most cases, no. If you are taking prerequisite classes toward being admitted to a graduate program then it may be possible to receive financial aid as a nondegree-seeking student. This would require the nondegree-seeking student to work with the Graduate Program Director and the Office of Financial Aid.
Who is my advisor as a nondegree student?
The advisor listed for all Postbaccalaureate students is the Associate Dean of the Graduate College.
Can I take graduate classes as a nondegree-seeking student?
Yes. You may need to receive permission from the department and the professor.
Am I limited on how many graduate classes I can take as a nondegree student?
No. That being said, there are limits on how many graduate classes you can take and transfer into a graduate program to which you are admitted to later. That limit is 30% of a graduate program as outlined in the Master's and Specialist Degree Requirements.

How many hours does one have to take to be considered a full-time graduate student?
A graduate student must take 9 graduate hours to be full time for the fall and spring semesters. Full time is considered 5 hours in summer.
Graduate Certificates
What is a Graduate Certificate?
Graduate Certificates are 9-20 credit hour programs focusing on an expertise (i.e. Graduate Certificate in Data Analytics) in a narrow subject area. Access the list of Graduate Certificates.
I am already admitted in a graduate degree. How do I add a Graduate Certificate?
Applying for a Graduate Certificate in addition to your degree program requires that you submit a Graduate Certificate Application through My Missouri State. No application fee is required nor will you be required to submit transcripts to Graduate Admissions. However, since Graduate Certificates are standalone programs, it may be required to submit or meet program-specific admission requirements. How much does it cost to apply for an additional Graduate Certificate?
Nothing. Current degree seeking graduate students are eligible to add a graduate certificate at no additional cost.
If I never apply to a Graduate Certificate but take all of the classes, will I earn the Graduate Certificate?
No. You must apply and be admitted to a Graduate Certificate before finishing all of the classes working toward the Graduate Certificate. You must also apply to graduate with the Graduate Certificate. Click on the "Graduation Application and Status Review" link in the "Graduation & Commencement" card in your My Missouri State.

Graduate Assistantships

Assistantships are offered throughout campus. Graduate students may wish to inquire at university offices and/or academic departments regarding the availability of assistantships.
Can I apply to be a graduate assistant before being admitted to a graduate program?
We encourage students to wait until they are admitted into a program to apply for graduate assistantship openings.
What is the deadline for applying to a graduate assistantship?

After submitting your application
I just submitted my application, did you receive it?
Applications are normally received one business day after they are submitted. Once your application is received and processed we will send you an email confirmation.
Can I check the status of my application online?
You can check your application status through GradCAS.
I made a mistake on the graduate application. Can I make a change after submitting it?
No. Once the application has been submitted, it cannot be changed. Contact Graduate Admissions to request changes.

How do I change my graduate program?
At the graduate level each graduate program is a standalone program with individual admission requirements. You will be required to submit a new graduate application.
Can I defer my application?
No, the Graduate College does not defer applications. If you would like to be considered for a different semester, you can submit a new application.
For how long are graduate applications for admission good?
Applications are only good for the terms indicated in the application cycle (Spring, Summer, Fall).
I applied to a graduate program at Missouri State but was not admitted. Do I need to send a complete application when I reapply?
Yes. You will need to submit a new graduate application though we may still have your transcripts on file. If you are reapplying to the same program, you may contact the department to inquire if your letters of recommendation are still on file, however most departments do not keep outdated application material.
When will the graduate program make an admission decision?
This varies from program to program. You should direct your question to the Graduate Program Director of the graduate program to which you applied.
After applying to a graduate program at Missouri State, I still have yet to receive my MSU ID number.
An applicant will not receive a MSU ID number until he/she is admitted to a graduate program at Missouri State University.
Transcripts
What is an official transcript?
Official hard-copy transcripts must arrive in the original sealed, stamped, official envelopes from your previous school. All seals and security features must be intact for a transcript to be accepted as official. Electronic transcripts are considered official when received through a secure site such as National Student Clearinghouse or Parchment, from your previous school.
Do you accept official transcripts sent electronically?
Yes. Official transcripts sent electronically through National Student Clearinghouse, Credentials Solutions, and Parchment can be sent to the following: GraduateAdmissions@MissouriState.edu.
Please note, if your school does not offer any of these services, your official transcript must be sent by mail.

Where can I submit my official transcript in person?

Can my institution fax Graduate Admissions transcripts?
No, we cannot accept faxed transcripts.
I have a copy of my official transcript in a sealed University envelope, can I send it or deliver it in person as official?
Yes. A final, official transcript sealed and embossed in the Institution's envelope can be mailed or delivered in person. Please note that the Graduate College will authenticate the document upon arrival.
How many official transcripts does someone need to send?

I'm a current Missouri State University undergraduate student and now admitted to graduate studies. Do I need to submit my final, official Missouri State transcript to the Graduate College?

If the transfer credit appears on your unofficial transcript in My Missouri State then you do not need to request to have those transcripts sent to Graduate Admissions.
I attended Missouri State University years ago. Do you still have the transcripts I previously submitted to Missouri State on file?
Prior to submission of your graduate application, please contact Graduate Admissions to confirm if your transcripts are still on file.
Will you contact my school to request my transcripts?
No, the responsibility lies with the applicant to order official transcripts from all institutions attended.
Can I include my official transcripts in a manila envelope and mail them to Graduate Admissions?
Transcripts submitted in this format by the applicant will not be considered official.
Do you accept unofficial transcripts?
You can upload an unofficial copy of your transcripts in the academic history section of your Grad CAS application.
Can you evaluate my transcripts before I apply?
No, we evaluate transcripts as part of our review process prior to admission.
Test Scores
When applying, how do I know what my department requires?
Review your academic program's page to review all admission requirements. All program requirements will also be listed in the application.
Can I apply if I haven't taken the GRE/GMAT yet?
Most departments will not review a file until the application is complete, which includes any required test scores. While you may apply at any time, the application may not be acted on by the department until all admission requirements are received.
Are GRE or GMAT scores required?
The GRE or GMAT are not required by the Graduate College. However, about half of all graduate programs do require GRE or GMAT scores. Review your graduate program's admission requirements to verify, or verify the requirements in the online application.
What is a satisfactory score on the GRE/GMAT?

Am I eligible for a GMAT/GRE Waiver?
The GRE and GMAT can only be waived by the Graduate Program Director of the program to which an applicant has applied. In cases where the GRE is required by the Graduate College because the applicant does not meet the minimum Graduate College admission requirements, the GRE cannot be waived.
My "Department Code" is not listed on the ETS website, what should I do?
Please use code 6665 for Missouri State University. It is not necessary to use a department code. If you are required to use one then choose the code most reflective of the program you will pursue.
For how long can my test scores be accepted?
The GRE is valid for 5 years and no longer available after 5 years. The GMAT is valid for five years and no longer available after 10 years. Whether your graduate program wishes to accept older scores will be determined by the Graduate Program Director.
I ordered my GRE scores to be sent before I applied. Will this be a problem?
Your GRE scores are electronically loaded. When you submit your application the scores will be matched to your application.
I sent my test scores to Missouri State years ago. Do you still have them on file?
Graduate Admissions follows the retention schedule set by the State of Missouri.
Letters of Recommendation
How do my recommenders submit their letters of recommendation?
If your program requires letters of recommendation, you will be able to provide contact information of the individuals who have agreed to be your recommenders in the online application. The recommender will receive an email to submit the letter of recommendation in a secure online portal.
Can the recommendations be sent by paper or pdf file?
Letters of recommendation can only be submitted through the online portal by the recommender.
To whom do I send my Letters of Recommendation, Writing Sample, Teacher Certification documentation, etc?
All program-specific admission requirements such as letters of recommendation, writing sample, teacher certification documentation should be submitted through the online application. If you have questions about program requirements, you can find the Graduate Program Director's contact information on your academic program's page or within the online application.
How do I know my recommenders have submitted their letters of recommendation?
You will be able to check the status of any letters of recommendation submitted through the online application under Check Status within GradCAS. If you have submitted your letters outside the application system, you would need to contact the Graduate Program Director to see if they have been received.
I am changing graduate programs. Can Graduate Admissions forward my letters of recommendation to the new Graduate Program Director?
No. You will need to indicate the new recommenders within your application for the new program.

Taking Graduate Classes as an Undergraduate
I am an undergraduate student--not admitted to an Accelerated Master's Program--but want to take graduate classes next semester. How do I go about that?
There are two options: General Mixed-Credit and Senior Permission. Both options allow you to take graduate-level classes while an undergraduate. For a full description of each, please review the Undergraduate Students Taking Graduate Credit policy.
What is the difference between Senior Permission and General Mixed-Credit?
- General Mixed-Credit allows an undergraduate student to earn graduate credit. More importantly, the graduate credit also works toward the degree requirements for the undergraduate degree being pursued. It is two for one.
- Senior Permission allows an undergraduate student to earn graduate credit; however, the graduate credit cannot be applied toward meeting your undergraduate degree requirements.
Will I receive financial aid for graduate courses I take while I am an undergraduate?
General Mixed-Credit is financial aid eligible because it also counts toward completing your undergraduate degree requirements. Senior Permission is not financial aid eligible because it does not work toward completing any degree requirements.

After Being Admitted to your Graduate Program
I received an email from my Graduate Program Director telling me I am admitted. How do I register?
Official admission will come via the Graduate Admissions office (GraduateAdmissions@MissouriState.edu). Until you receive the admission email from Graduate Admissions with your BearPass Number (M#), you will be unable to create a new university User ID and be unable to register.
Have I been assigned an advisor?
Yes, all students are assigned an advisor upon admission. You will be able to see your advisor listed in the Academic's Tab in My Missouri State.
I have received my letter of admission from the Graduate College, but I will not be attending. What do I need to do?
Please send an email to GraduateAdmissions@MissouriState.edu indicating you are withdrawing your application. We also recommend that you contact the Graduate Program Director to inform him or her.
I noticed my unofficial transcripts in My Missouri State do not show the undergraduate transcripts I sent to Graduate Admissions. Why Not?
Graduate Admissions does not transfer in undergraduate coursework. While you may have graduate coursework transferred in--no more than 30% of a graduate program with the permission of the Graduate Program Director--only the classes that are transferred will appear after you have received permission and submitted the Transfer Request form.
I am an International Graduate student who has just been admitted. When will I receive my I-20 paperwork?
Graduate Admissions does not handle visa paperwork. You must direct your questions to International Services (InternationalServices@missouristate.edu).
Readmission After an Absence
How much does it cost to complete a reactivate graduate application?
Nothing. The reactivate graduate application is free. We are just updating your biographical information and notifying the university of your intent to return to finish the program you were previously enrolled in.
I have not attended Missouri State University for more than one year as a graduate student. How do I get readmitted?
Readmission to your program after an absence of one year or more requires that you submit a new application through GradCAS to update biographical information and notify the university of your intent to return.
I am a returning graduate student. Do I have to resubmit my transcripts?
You should submit updated transcripts if you have taken any graduate coursework since you last attended.
I would like to reapply for admission. Can I reuse any items from my previous application?
Yes. Transcripts still on file can be reused though a new graduate application must be submitted. Test scores still on file can be used assuming they are not expired or assuming they are expired but the Graduate Program Director chooses to accept them as expired. Program-specific items (i.e. letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, etc.) must be resubmitted to the new program.
Accelerated Master's Programs
Am I eligible for the Accelerated Master’s Program?
- You must be a current Missouri State University, Evangel University or Southwest Baptist (SBU) undergraduate student. (SBU is limited to the Master of Accountancy-Accelerated).
- You must be a junior (60+ credit hours already earned).
- You must have at least one more full semester as an undergraduate remaining.
To which semester do I apply for the Accelerated Program?
Apply for the semester after you will graduate with your bachelor’s degree. For example, if you graduate in Spring 2026, you should apply for admission for the following Summer or Fall 2026.
Does the Accelerated Master’s program have different admission requirements than the traditional master’s program?
Requirements vary from program to program. Review the Graduate Catalog for your program or the online application. Many programs do have different admission requirements for the Accelerated program.
But I intend to take graduate courses before graduating with my bachelor’s. To which semester do I apply?
Apply for the semester after you will graduate with your bachelor’s degree. You will complete a Mixed-Credit form for each semester you intend to take graduate-level courses.
How do I register for graduate level courses?
You will complete a Mixed-Credit form.
What do I do with the Mixed-Credit form?
- Complete the form.
- Collect the needed signatures from your department/program.
- Bring the Mixed-Credit form to the Graduate College (Carrington, Rm. 306) or email the form to GraduateCollege@missouristate.edu.
- Take the Mixed-Credit form to the Registrar (Carrington, Rm. 320)
How many credit hours does my Accelerated Master’s Program permit?
Access a list of all programs with the credits permitted can be found on the Accelerated Master's Program page.
Should you enroll in the undergraduate-level class to hold your ‘place’?
Do not register for the UG equivalent of the class! You are not holding a place for yourself, but instead taking a seat from a student who is not an Accelerated Master’s Program student.
When will you know you can register for the graduate-level equivalent of the class?
The following business day after taking the form to the Office of the Registrar, you should be able to register for the Graduate-level class.
Do you have to follow this process each and every semester?
Yes, each and every semester you intend to take graduate-level classes.
When will you officially become a graduate student?

Contact GraduateAdmissions@MissouriState.edu and ask to have your application moved to the correct semester. Include Full Name, Date of Birth, and request.
Central Application Service
I am interested in one of the programs listed below, how do I apply?
All of these programs use their own third-party Central Application Service (CAS) to make their initial admission decision. You do not apply to these programs through GradCAS.

- Dietetics internship graduate certificate
- Nursing (MS)
- Nursing Practice, Doctor of
- Nutrition and dietetics (MS) for non-registered dietitian nutrionists
- Occupational Therapy, Master of (MOT)
- Physical Therapy, Doctor of (DPT)
- Physician assistant studies (MS)
- Post-master's nurse educator graduate certificate
- Post-master's population health graduate certificate
- Registered nurse first assist graduate certificate
- Social Work, Master of (MSW)
- Speech-language pathology (MS)
I tried to apply to one of the above programs but can't find it on the GradCAS application. Why not?
One must apply through each program's respective Central Application Service application. For this reason, none of these applications are available through GradCAS.
The Graduate Program Director has admitted me to one of the above programs. What do I do now?
Official admission will come via the Graduate Admissions office (GraduateAdmissions@MissouriState.edu). Until you receive the admission email from Graduate Admissions with your BearPass Number (M#), you will be unable to create a new university User ID and be unable to register.
The Graduate Program Director has admitted me to one of the above programs, but I haven't received my BearPass Number. How do I get my student number?
Graduate Admissions will provide you with an admission email once the process of transferring and admitted you in Missouri State's system is complete. The admission email will include your student number (BearPass Number).

I have been admitted to one of the above programs, do I need to submit transcripts?
Graduate Admissions will contact you by email if final, official transcripts are needed. In general, we will pull the transcripts from the CAS system into our own system and accept those as official. However, if you sent incomplete transcripts--transcripts not showing receipt of a bachelor's degree--then you will be required to submit final, official transcripts to Graduate Admissions at Missouri State University.
I have been admitted to one of the above programs, do I need to submit GRE scores?
Graduate Admissions will accept official GRE scores submitted to the respective CAS. We will transfer this information into your Missouri State University account.
